Pelham Council on Aging Awards selects Philip R Currier for the 2025 William McDevitt Distinguished Service Award:
Yearly, the Pelham Council on Aging (PCOA) presents a William McDevitt Distinguished Service Award to an individual who devotes significant time and energy to the Pelham community’s quality of life and provides leadership in effecting positive change to our social and governmental functions.
This year’s recipient, Philip R Currier, is an established presence in all areas of Pelham community life from a public service aspect, as well as being a philanthropic contributor and supporter of town organizations and governmental agencies.
Phil was honored at the PCOA Spring Fling at Lenzi’s in Dracut, MA on 6 May 2025 and was joined by his son and friends as this honor was bestowed on him by the PCOA and Joyce McDevitt, wife of the McDevitt Award Honoree, Bill McDevitt a man of outstanding character and accomplishments over his lifetime.
Phil Currier absolutely satisfies the criteria established for this award and has a long list of accomplishments and contributions to our Pelham Community.
His Public service includes:
- Special justice in the Pelham Municipal Court 1969-1974
- Involvement with the General Court for multiple years
- Chairman of the Pelham School Board 1970-1972
- From 1969 through March 2022, he held every elective office in Town
- School Board, School Moderator, Town Moderator, Selectman, Representative, etc.
- Pelham Town Moderator for 40 years
- Presently acting as Consultant for Town Elections
- Acts as Moderator at the First Congregational Church
- Member of the NH Constitutional Convention 1974-1984
- State Representative 1973-1979
His personal contributions to the Town include:
- Financial and personal support for Pelham Youth Programs
- Little League
- Boy Scouts
- Youth Basketball
- His unselfish donation of his property on Tallant Road for use by the Pelham Little League prior to development of their current facilities
- Donation of 20 acres to the Town for future cemetery expansion
- Member of Pelham Historical Society
- Auctioneer and active participant at Pelham Old Home Day
- Coordinated and supported Repair of the Town Clock at the First Congregational Church
He currently remains active and continually can be seen pitching in when needed.
Based upon the foregoing he is considered by the PCOA as deserving of this award.
In addition to this ceremonial award, the PCOA yearly donates $500 to the charity of the recipient’s choice. Phil selected the Pelham Good Neighbor Fund. Not to be undone and consistent with his philanthropic nature, Phil donated an additional $500 which means that the Pelham Good Neighbor Fund will be receiving $1,000 in funding to support their charitable efforts, thanks to Phil.
The Pelham Council on Aging truly appreciates his willingness to contribute time and efforts to our fine community and we wish him health and well-being as he continues his varied productive roles in our Town of Pelham.
