Pelham’s trail network consists of over 22 miles of scenic paths, but many remain inaccessible to older adults and individuals with disabilities due to challenging terrain and lack of infrastructure. Recognizing this need, Pelham Pathways, Inc. was founded in December 2024 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to creating sustainable, accessible outdoor spaces that promote physical and mental well-being for people of all ages and abilities.
The organization’s first major initiative, the Merriam Farm All Persons Trail, will transform an existing conservation trail into a universally accessible pathway. This project is a direct response to the 2021 Nashua Regional Planning Commission (NRPC) assessment, which identified the need for inclusive outdoor spaces in Pelham.
Pelham Pathways is thrilled to announce its first major donation since launching its capital fundraising campaign on January 1, 2025. Fred and Carol Merriam have generously donated $10,000, securing the naming rights for the trail, which will be called Virginia’s Trail in honor of Fred’s grandmother. Virginia was a passionate conservationist, and her love for nature continues to inspire her descendants to share that legacy with the Pelham community.
The estimated cost for the trail is $238,000, and thanks to contributions from the Forestry and Conservation Committees, civic organizations, and now the Merriams, $117,000 has already been raised. This significant gift serves as a call to action for others to give generously and help make this vision a reality. Every donation, large or small, plays a crucial role in building a trail that will welcome everyone, regardless of age or ability.
Pelham Pathways invites civic groups, businesses, and individuals to support this initiative and ensure that outdoor recreation is accessible to all. Together, we can create a lasting impact for generations to come.
