Community Trail Coalition Hosts Guided Nature Hike at Merriam Farm Conservation Area
Pelham, NH – On Saturday, June 15th, the Community Trail Coalition, sponsored by the Pelham Council on Aging, organized a guided nature hike at the Merriam Farm Conservation Area. This picturesque 46-acre area, encompassing fields, woodlands, and prime wetlands, offers a unique glimpse into Pelham’s rich farming history and thriving ecosystems.
The Merriam Farm, once known as Cutter Farm, dates back to the early 1800s. In 2019, the Pelham Conservation Commission purchased the land, and by 2022, it was designated a Town Forest. Today, it stands as a protected conservation area, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Merriam Family, the Pelham Conservation Commission, and Paul Gagnon.
Participants embarked on an easy, one-and-a-half-mile trail, discovering the diverse wildlife and vibrant habitats that make Merriam Farm special. Highlights of the hike included a visit to the grassland areas, home to various grasses and wildflowers, and a critical habitat for species like the Monarch butterfly. With Monarch populations plummeting by 80% in the past decade due to habitat loss and climate change, the hike emphasized the importance of conservation efforts. Participants learned simple ways to support Monarchs, such as planting milkweed in their gardens.
Another significant feature of the Merriam Farm Conservation Area is Beaver Brook, a prime wetland that plays a crucial role in maintaining environmental health. Wetlands act as natural water filters, absorb carbon more efficiently than rainforests, and prevent flooding. Beaver Brook, along with other local streams, supports both wildlife and the community.
The hike also provided insights into the local fox population. Both red and gray foxes inhabit the area, with gray foxes showcasing their unique ability to climb trees.
For those interested in future guided hikes and exploring Pelham’s conservation lands, the Community Trail Coalition encourages residents to join these educational and engaging events. Additionally, participants with iPhones were shown how to download the ArcGISApp to access maps of Pelham trails, enhancing their hiking experience.
By joining these hikes, community members not only enjoy the natural beauty of Pelham’s conservation lands but also contribute to preserving these vital habitats for future generations. The next guided hike promises to be an enriching experience for all ages.
