Pickleball Extravaganza Makes a Smash Hit: Community Unites for a Day of Fun and Charity

In a display of community spirit and sporting prowess, the pickleball tournament held on October 28th at our brand new courts built on the grounds of Hobbs Community Center, 8 Nashua Road in Pelham by the Pelham NH Council on Aging, proved to be an unparalleled success. The event coordinated by volunteer Lynne Hildreth brought together seasoned players and newcomers alike for an exhilarating day of action on the courts. While the exact financial results are still being tallied, it\’s estimated that approximately $3,700 was raised. What\’s more, this figure could rise, as some donations and contributions are yet to be recorded.

The event, which attracted 48 enthusiastic players, was especially notable for the fact that two-thirds of them had taken up the sport only since the spring. The pickleball community has been growing, and the tournament provided an excellent platform for these newcomers to showcase their burgeoning skills.

What truly made this tournament stand out was the tremendous support from volunteers and spectators. Over a dozen individuals selflessly dedicated their time and energy to ensure the event\’s smooth operation, while more than 30 spectators gathered to cheer on the participants. Additionally, the tournament drew curious onlookers, inspiring them to join the frenzy of pickleball madness.

Competing at three different skill levels, from beginners to intermediates and advanced players, there was no shortage of thrilling matches to be witnessed. In the end, eight deserving champions were crowned and awarded with Visors and Drink bottles generously donated by Donna and Michael Yopp.

The excitement didn\’t end on the courts. Spectators and participants alike had the chance to win prizes through raffles. Lucky winners also had the opportunity to indulge in a pickleball lesson for four, personally conducted by the pro, Michael Messier. Furthermore, wine baskets were up for grabs, providing the perfect way to celebrate the day\’s achievements, and a Dunkin\’ Basket offered a delightful boost to kick start mornings.

If you missed out on the event but still want to show your support, worry not. There are around 20 tournament-themed tee shirts available for purchase, allowing you to wear your pickleball pride on your sleeve.

In terms of expenses, the tournament managed to keep them at a minimum, with the main cost incurred in the production of tee shirts. The overwhelming generosity of the players, volunteers, and donors ensured that the event remained financially healthy and was able to contribute to a worthy cause.

The success of this pickleball tournament was not just about the sport but also a testament to the power of community engagement and support. With a blend of competition, camaraderie, and charitable giving, it was an event that truly encapsulated the spirit of our town. As we eagerly await the final tally of funds raised, one thing is certain: the pickleball madness has firmly cemented its place in our community\’s heart, and we look forward to even more successful events in the future.
