Dear Pelham Community,
Nestled in the heart of our beloved town lies an expansive network of trails, spanning approximately 30 miles and offering a myriad of outdoor activities. From leisurely strolls and invigorating runs to biking, skiing, and horseback riding, these trails serve as a lifeline to nature and a haven for recreation. However, we recognize the pressing need for more accessible trails, ensuring that every member of our community, regardless of age or ability, can revel in the joy of the great outdoors.
Our 2023 Master Plan emphasizes the creation of trails catering to older adults, individuals with disabilities, dog walkers, and families with young children. To meet this need head-on, the Council on Aging (COA) is taking the lead by spearheading the development of a new, user-friendly ½ mile trail at the Cutler Spalding Conservation Area on Old County Road. Formerly known as the Lareau Farm, this area holds immense potential to become an inviting space for all. However, we can\’t achieve this vision without the support of compassionate volunteers like you.
We\’re extending an invitation to the community to join our efforts. Volunteers will play a pivotal role in constructing and installing kiosks, benches, trail markers, and a boardwalk, ensuring the trail is not only accessible but also a source of joy for all who tread upon it.
But that\’s not all! The COA is establishing a Community Trails Coalition (CTC) dedicated to ensuring the accessibility and safety of our trail network. This involves eliminating hazards, providing clear signage, and maintaining a welcoming environment for all community members. We believe that community involvement is the key to aligning trail development with residents\’ needs and fostering a sense of ownership.
As we embark on this journey, our goal is to develop tailored programs encouraging people of all ages and abilities to utilize easy walking trails throughout Pelham\’s network. Through educational events, guided walks, and recreational activities, we aim to increase awareness of the accessible trails and provide opportunities for all community members to relish the natural beauty of Pelham.
We implore you to join us in making our trails a vibrant and inclusive community asset. Your time and dedication can make a significant impact on our community\’s well-being.
If you\’re passionate about preserving and enhancing our outdoor resources, promoting accessibility for all, and fostering a sense of community through trail stewardship, we invite you to connect with Yvonne La-Garde, COA Chairperson, at ylg52@comcast.net or 508.397.0383. Reach out to express your interest, get involved, or join our email membership. There\’s strength in numbers, and we need a large, passionate group of people to support our efforts.
Let\’s unite to make Pelham\’s trails more welcoming, inclusive, and enjoyable for everyone. Your compassionate commitment to the Community Trails Coalition will undoubtedly leave a lasting legacy in our community.
With gratitude,
Yvonne La-Garde, Chairperson Pelham NH Council on Aging
