Community Trail Coalition/March Update

Enhancing Accessibility and Safety on Pelham’s Trails

Dear Trail Blazers,

As we step into March, the Community Trail Coalition (CTC) is excited to share some updates on our ongoing efforts to enhance accessibility and safety on Pelham’s trails.

Bridging the Gap for Safety: Bog bridges, those humble yet essential structures that keep our feet dry and protect wetlands, are receiving attention from the CTC. These bridges, also known as puncheon bridges, endure the elements and heavy foot traffic throughout the year. We recognize the importance of making them safer for hikers of all ages and abilities. To address this, the CTC is exploring options to reduce slipping hazards. Once approved by the Forestry Committee, we’ll call upon volunteers to help implement these safety measures.

Bluebird Collaboration: In collaboration with Pelham’s Bluebird Society, we’re excited to announce plans to build and install bluebird houses along the perimeters of Pelham’s trails. Working alongside Roger Montbleau, also known as Mr. Bluebird, we aim to enhance the biodiversity and beauty of our trail network while supporting local wildlife.

Introducing All Persons Trails: We’re thrilled to see progress in making nature more accessible and inclusive with the opening of the All Persons Trail at Manchester’s Cedar Swamp Preserve in 2022. Inspired by this intitaive, the CTC is exploring feasibility of introducing a similar trail in Pelham. To that end, we’ve enlisted Hermit Woods Trail Builders to conduct a feasibility study across various locations in our town.

Closing Statement: As we embark on these endeavors, we’re reminded of the power of community collaboration in nurturing our natural spaces. Together, we can ensure that Pelham’s trails remain inviting and accessible. Let’s continue blazing new trails and fostering connections with nature.

Happy trails,

Pelham Community Trail Coalition
